The Alastair James Memorial Trust

The Alastair James Memorial Trust was established to commemorate the short life of Alastair James and celebrate the impact he had on those around him. Alastair James was the younger son of Noel (Jimmy) James OBE MC and his wife Cecilia (née Livingstone). He was born on 13 May 1954 in Oxford and was christened at St Giles Church Oxford by his great-uncle, the Rt Rev George Bell, Bishop of Chichester.

Alastair was diagnosed with leukaemia at just 6 years old, and he passed away six weeks after his diagnosis, on 15 September 1960. Whilst Alastair’s life may have been short, his legacy lives on through The Alastair James Memorial Trust which was set up in 2020, 60 years after his death.

The aims of the Alastair James Memorial Trust are to:

  1. Make grants to other registered charities and to community/voluntary groups throughout East Midlands and East Anglia.
  2. Only Charities/groups with an annual income of £1.5 million or less will be considered
  3. Make grants to individuals at the Trustees’ discretion in circumstances where those individuals can demonstrate an unfulfilled need.
  4. Purchase items of equipment, including - but not restricted to – vehicles, for donation to charities and community/voluntary groups, always provided that such equipment has been manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Am I eligible to apply?

  • Applications from groups and individuals welcome from Northamptonshire, East Midlands and East Anglia
  • You must have a set of written rules or a constitution that your group adheres to with a dissolution clause.  We can help advise you on how to do this especially if you are a new group
  • You must take care to ensure that young people or vulnerable people taking part in your activity do not come to any harm whilst in your care. To this end, you must have written procedures for keeping young people and/or vulnerable people safe otherwise known as a Child Protection or Vulnerable people’s policy. This will be needed as a condition of funding. If you do not have such a policy, visit our Help for Groups page to download an example.
  • You must have an equalities policy in place. We have resources on our website to help with this
