Northamptonshire Community Foundation launches fund to support care leavers

Northamptonshire Community Foundation has launched the Pathways to Independence: Care Leavers Fund, a new fund which will provide grants to charities and community groups supporting young people leaving care across the county. The programme will invest £150,000 over three years, with match funding helping to increase its impact.

The launch event at the University of Northampton was attended by local leaders, charities and organisations working with care-experienced young people. Special guest speakers Fatima Whitbread MBE and Gina Gardiner, Vice Chair of Fatima’s UK Campaign, spoke about the challenges young people face when leaving care and the importance of practical support, confidence, and life skills.

The Pathways to Independence Fund will provide grants to projects helping 18–25-year-olds with education, training, employment, mentoring, wellbeing support and essential household items.

Rachel McGrath, Chief Executive of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “This fund will help care-experienced young people take the next steps towards independent, fulfilling lives. We are proud to launch it with Fatima Whitbread MBE and Gina Gardiner, alongside all our valued partners, supporting this important work.”

Grants Manager Alex Rex facilitated a panel discussion with Fatima Whitbread MBE, Gina Gardiner, Amarjit Pawar and Dimz Malatji.

Fatima Whitbread MBE, said: “Children are our future - every child deserves to feel safe, seen and loved.  How we treat the most vulnerable determines the quality of our society.”

Gina Gardiner, Vice Chair of Fatima’s UK Campaign, added: "One of the most powerful gifts you can give to anyone is to believe in someone and to provide the support they need to thrive.  The Pathways To Independence - Care Leavers Fund will provide the opportunity for so many young people leaving care to be positively supported so that they can thrive and fulfil their potential."

The launch also marks 25 years of Northamptonshire Community Foundation supporting local communities, having awarded over £24 million in grants since 2001. As the Foundation celebrates this milestone, it looks ahead with a continued commitment to creating a fairer, more connected county, ensuring that local people and organisations have the support they need to thrive.
