The Asian Women and Girls Organisation, Dostiyo have been awarded £4,440 by Northamptonshire Community Foundation through the St Giles Charitable Trust.
Dostiyo provides services to local Asian women and communities offering support and advice on a wide range of issues. The group provides activities and opportunities for all of its service users to build self-confidence and to help overcome cultural, religious, physical and social barriers.
The grant awarded will enable the organisation to run a 12 week specialised Counselling skills course at their centre helping women to return to education in an informal and enjoyable fashion.
Funding will cover the cost of transport to and from the centre for service users, many of which are elderly or physically disabled.
Deepa Bakrania, Centre Manager of Dostiyo said “We are very thankful to Northamptonshire Community Foundation for offering us the grant to provide a 12 week ‘Self Awareness and Active Listening Skills Course’. This course will enable some very vulnerable students, including the physically disabled to have the confidence to return to education in a supported, informal and fun way. The course has provided an opportunity to explore a whole new world of 'academic learning' in a safe, warm and culturally appropriate environment through ongoing emotional support and encouragement to learn, to listen, self-analyse and speak up will greatly enhance the wellbeing of these isolated ladies.”
