The thirty groups, all funded by the Foundation in the year 2008-9, were shortlisted for an award, with the winners unveiled on the night.
This high profile event, attended by over 300 people, was designed to recognise and reward groups for the amazing difference they have each made to their communities.
There were six awards up for grabs – with the categories designed to represent the diversity of grants distributed by the Foundation.
Our 2009 winners
Sport Award
Winner: Bridge Substance Misuse Programme , based in Northampton and Corby
This group received a grant from the Foundation of £4,850 to fund boxing courses for ex-offenders with drug and/or alcohol misuse problems. This superb project helps clients live healthier lives and not fall back into the criminal lifestyles which feed drug addiction.
Creating Community Award
Winner: The Friends of Delapre Abbey in Northampton received a £20,000 grant from the WNDC Stronger Communities Fund to fund a range of activities and events – including a Victorian tea room, educational activities for local school children to learn about their local history and environment and a new outdoor learning experience in and around the beautiful grounds of Delapre Abbey.
Healthy Living Award
Winner: Dostiyo Asian Women and Girls Association received a grant of just over £1,800 to support women suffering from depression and isolation with education and exercise classes, workshops on mental health, weight management sessions and much more – enabling these vulnerable women to come together, forge friendships and gain access to support and education programmes.
Arts Craft and Music Category
Winner: Late Developers Photographic Group in Corby used a £4,500 grant to learn the technique of pinhole and digital photography and to then create a Community Diary for Corby. The judges were particularly impressed with this group’s links with a local mental health group, enabling those living with mental illness to join in.
West Northants Development Corporation’s (WNDC) Stronger Community Category
Winner: Headway in Northampton used a grant of just over £8,000 to build a much needed and beautiful garden for people with brain injuries, so they can enjoy a multi sensory outdoor area which is both relaxing and safe.
High Sheriff Category
Adrenaline Alley, an indoor skateboarding and BMX park based in Corby, impressed the judges with its commitment to providing young people with a world class venue. A Foundation grant of £995 grant helped the park to fund the UK’s only amateur competition for BMX riding.
