The Royal and Derngate Theatre have been awarded £5,000 by Northamptonshire Community Foundation through the Youth Social Action Fund.

The Royal and Derngate theatre will use their grant to develop their Shared Moon – Mothertongue Tales project to encourage more young people to become Art Leaders in the county. They will commission a local playwright to adapt the tales into 5 short scripts for children providing them with a true understanding of the diverse communities across Northamptonshire.

Trudy Bell, the theatre’s Creative Learning Director said “Royal & Derngate’s Arts Leaders group provides young people between 14 and 25 the opportunity to have a voice and make a difference to their community through arts-based activities.  Following their award-nominated story sharing project that brought together diverse communities that the young people had previously not engaged with, the Arts Leaders worked with professional artists and writers to adapt the shared stories into a book entitled Mothertongue Tales.
With further funding from NCF, the Mothertongue Tales project will now be able to commission a local playwright to adapt the tales into 5 short scripts for children and then work with KS2&3 students within 5 local schools who have diverse communities to create performances of these scripts.  They will then come together in a festival of tales at Royal & Derngate for the local community to attend.  Education packs linked to the tales will also be offered to schools to extend learning relating to storytelling and diversity. It is hoped that through this project, young people and the wider community will have a greater awareness of the diversity within the town and that more Arts Leaders will be recruited as young people see that they can make a positive difference within their community if they get involved.”
