International Women's Day 2017

Published - Tuesday, 24 January, 2017

International Women's Day means different things to different people. Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement and International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality to accelerate gender parity.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #BeBoldForChange. We’re asking all women to call on the masses to help forge a better working world - a more gender inclusive world.

Read about the success of last years' International Women's Day 2016 and the launch of our Avon Female Empowerment fund here.

Generously sponsored by Avon UK and supported by Winwick Hall.

Our guest speakers include:

Judith Allnatt; an acclaimed short story writer and novelist.

Judith’s first novel, A Mile of River, was a Radio 5 Live Book of the Month and was shortlisted for the Portico Prize for Literature; her second novel, The Poet’s Wife, was shortlisted for the East Midlands Book Award. HarperCollins recently published her latest novel, The Silk Factory, a beautiful and eerie story of love and memory. Judith has lectured widely on Creative Writing for universities and freelance for over two decades. She lives with her family in Northamptonshire and is working on her fifth novel.

Debra Charles, CEO Novacroft Group

After beginning her career in robotics and computing, where she saw the potential of technology to simplify complexity, Debra Charles founded Novacroft in 1998, with a vision to bring talented individuals together to embrace technology and innovation and change the way things are done for the better. Today, Novacroft is an award-winning smart technology and software solution company helping clients such as Transport for London and the Royal British Legion get more for less and making life easier for all.
Debra was a finalist in the 2012 NatWest Everywoman awards, before being named entrepreneur alumnus of the year by Cranfield University in 2013. She was a finalist for the Smith & Williamson Entrepreneur of the Year in the National Business Awards 2015.

Glennis Hooper, Executive Fundraiser, Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Appeal

Crazy Hats Charity started as a fun, one-off event back in 2001 when its founder, Glennis Hooper who was a new headteacher in Kettering, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 46.  Being forced to take a year out Glennis decided to involve her children in raising funds for the breast care unit she was being treated at Kettering General Hospital. A ‘Crazy Hats Day’ was planned whereby children donned handmade crazy hats and paid 50p for the privilege. Other schools got involved and the fun event escalated into a full-blown countywide fundraiser, in one day over £20,000 was raised!  Fifteen years on, that £20k has multiplied many times over with the total now surpassing £2.5 million.
