On International Women’s Day March 2016, Northamptonshire Community Foundation teamed up with Avon Cosmetics UK to launch the Avon Female Empowerment Fund. In line with Avon’s commitment to support the causes that matter most to women, the fund's key priority is to support projects across Northamptonshire that will improve the quality of life for women and girls.
The Good Loaf CIC is the first group to be awarded a grant from Avon’s Female Empowerment Fund. The group are an artesian bakery which aims to provide real employment opportunities to vulnerable local women to break the cycle of poverty, unemployment and offending.
Andrea Slater, Avon GVP Western Europe and UK President presented the team at The Good Loaf with a cheque for £3,000 during a visit to the project on Monday afternoon (21st November).
Suzy Van Rooyen, Chief Executive of The Good Loaf said “We are delighted to have been awarded £3000 through the Avon Female Empowerment Fund to put towards the development of a herb/vegetable growing rooftop garden.
During a health and safety inspection, we received a recommendation to deck the space as the floor is uneven causing a potential trip hazard. This will then create a suitable area to give ladies on our work program the opportunity to grow herbs and vegetables which can be used in our community café or they can take them home to share with their families.
We have vulnerable females (predominantly offenders) accessing our premises 6 days a week and this facility would be available to them on each of these days. We have several community volunteers willing to assist the ladies with planting and maintaining the vegetables and the ladies would then be trained to help new candidates on the program offering a peer support service."
Andrea Slater - GVP Western Europe and President UK, Avon said of the donation “I am so proud that Avon’s long standing commitment to supporting women’s causes is having an impact on both a national and local level. Working with NCF allows Avon to offer grants to incredible local projects like the Good Loaf, which make a real difference to the community and all the people involved. I look forward to seeing the rooftop garden when it is complete and know it will be a real enhancement to the fantastic service already offered by the Good Loaf.”
Victoria Miles DL, the CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation attended the cheque presentation at The Good Loaf and said “We are delighted that Avon UK has chosen to support local women’s causes through The Avon Female Empowerment Fund. Northamptonshire Community Foundation continues to put its head above the parapet to make the county aware of the real issues of need within Northamptonshire, including women’s issues.”
