First for Wellbeing Target Fund



The First for Wellbeing Target Fund will offer grants from £500 up to £20,000 to develop ongoing project activity or initiate new project activity supporting people's health and wellbeing for the Northampton wards of Castle and Spencer and the Wellingborough ward of Swanspool.


The project activity must be specifically targeting people and communities who are vulnerable or socially isolated or suffer from loneliness and poor mental wellbeing.


The project activity MUST have a community development approach and show how this work will continue beyond one year of funding. The role of community development is to support people and communities to identify and articulate their needs, and to take practical collective action to address them.


Projects will be considered across a range of activities including arts,culture, education and skills, environment, tackling disadvantage and exclusion, sports and recreation.


Your application must explain how the activities will support the improvement of health and wellbeing for individuals and communities for example reducing social isolation and loneliness, improving people's physical, emotional and mental health, improving the quality of the local environment and use of public space.


Example projects may include:


  • Projects reducing social isolation
  • Projects addressing low mental wellbeing
  • Community action time banks
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Paying for a training programme
  • Buying materials for a community arts group
  • Delivering new cultural experiences
  • Recycling projects or other positive local environmental projects e.g. community composting
  • Projects that benefit older people, helping them to stay in their local community or feel part of their community
  • Small community events to build neighbourliness and to enable communities to meet their own needs
  • A newsletter or e-bulletin that seeks to put people in touch with each other
  • Healthy eating projects


Am I eligible?





  • Your group must be a small, locally managed, voluntary, community or self-help group
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate that the activity will help support the First for   Wellbeing core purpose of 'Helping you to help yourself.'



    The programme will not fund the following:

    • Profit making organisations
    • Capital or refurbishment projects

  • You must have people volunteering to help with your activity, who are not part of your management committee
  • You must have a set of written rules or constitution that your group adheres to. We can help advise you on how to do this especially if you are a new group
  • You must have a child protection policy in place
